The Road to the High-Performance Workforce: Get educated

Posted by: Lee Ramsayer

In my previous post, I dove deeper into the concept of the high-performance workforce that Andy introduced on Unleash the Monster a few weeks ago.

My focus was on real-time labor intelligence to help measure and better understand your region’s workforce, and using this intelligence to fine-tune your workforce so that it has the skills, knowledge and abilities to fill the jobs available today and the jobs of the future.

But once you analyze this intelligence about your region’s employment situation, how do you elicit the changes necessary to educate your workforce and create a pipeline to move these workers into applicable jobs?

If new skills or abilities are needed in your workforce to make it more attractive to potential employers, the solution may already exist in your region’s educational system.

By teaming with your local educational system to encourage the teaching of these skills and abilities, you can essentially create a constantly renewing source of qualified employees well equipped to fill available jobs. Of course, prior to teaching these skills and abilities, you will need to first focus on staffing teachers and educators capable of doing so.

Regional educational systems also must be flexible enough to prepare different students for a variety of potential educational and career paths, and responsive enough to prepare students for ever-changing skills requirements in their chosen line of work.

In addition to adapting existing educational institutions, establishing youth and scholarship programs can go a long way in grooming your region’s workforce.

These programs allow local businesses to work with youth prior to hiring them in an entry-level capacity, further enhance the education and skills of the workforce and provide a solid pipeline of skilled workers and leaders to local businesses. As an added bonus, studies show that this type of career exposure can also help to keep kids in school.

By utilizing your educational system and establishing new programs to better equip your workforce, you begin construction of a pipeline that funnels workers with necessary skills and abilities directly into applicable jobs. In our upcoming post, we’ll discuss the completion of the pipeline: creating programs and resources to help match these people to available positions.
